Military Bases in Maryland: Camp Fretterd Military Reservation

Just northwest of Reisterstown, the Maryland Army National Guard operates Camp Fretterd. The 58th Troop Command is located there, and the camp includes training areas for heavy equipment, maneuver, rappelling and more.

Fort Meade, founded in 1917 like its counterpart Aberdeen Proving Ground, is a larger military installation complete with a commissary, medical facilities and other amenities.

Military Bases in Maryland: Joint Base Andrews

Joint Base Andrews, where Air Force One lives, is home to Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine units. A local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol is also located at Andrews, as well.

Military Bases in Maryland: Naval Air Station Patuxent River

Naval Air Station Patuxent River is in St. Mary’s County at the confluence of the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay. It’s a 14,500-acre complex that’s home to Naval Air Systems Command and Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division headquarters, and only a handful of service members are stationed there.

Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center is located across the Potomac from (and just a touch north of) Quantico, which is in Virginia. There’s a Navy Exchange, commissary and a handful of other amenities available to service members, retirees and qualifying dependents.
