Wild Adventure: Explore St. Mary’s College in Ellicott City
Built in 1868, St. Mary’s College was designed to train local young men on religious career paths. But in 1972, the facility was abandoned – enrollment was too low to keep the doors open. The empty buildings began to fall apart, especially when urban explorers started pouring in – and now, all that’s left are the charred remains of leftover ruins.
How to Get to St. Mary’s College in Patapsco Valley State Park
If you want to explore St. Mary’s College, head into the Patapsco Valley State Park and take Illchester Road to River Road. Park in the bend, and walk back to the railroad bridge. You’re not permitted to park under the railroad tracks.
Look in the brush on the south side of the railroad bridge – there are steps there. Then, look for the next flight of stairs in the woods that will drop you off right at the ruins.
If you want a birds-eye view, you can hike the Buzzard’s Rock Trail (off Hilltop Road).
